My baby turned 21 yesterday. Twenty-one! I'm not sure when I got old enough to have a 21-year-old. But in looking back, I can't really remember my life without him. Sure I remember being a kid and going to school, living with my parents and all. But sometimes I feel like my life didn't really begin until I was grown up and knew what I wanted to do with it. And Jeff has always been a part of that life.

Being a parent was not always my favorite thing. Probably because there were times when I really didn't feel like I was all that good at it. And Jeff has not always been a joy to parent. But he's come a long way. And I have to admit, he's a cute kid and a pretty funny guy. He makes me laugh! And I love it when I can make him laugh too.

Oh, and I taught him how to give a great hug. So, he's got that going for him. And he gets to practice every time he sees me. Gotta love that!

We don't live in the same town anymore, so I don't get to see him as often as I'd like. But I think about him every day. He's definitely one of my favorites.

It's that time of year again when we start planning for Relay. Only this year, I am the Team Development Chair. That's HUGE for me. I'm a bit nervous. No, I'm REALLY nervous. And I'm not accustomed to being nervous.

I don't worry about singing into a microphone. I have no qualms about speaking in front of a crowd. I am the opposite of shy and timid. And I've rarely struggled to find something to say in just about any situation.

But in this role, I have to motivate others. I'll lead the meetings and keep everyone on track. I need to find new teams. I'm not so worried about finding new teams. We've had LOTS of teams in the past. We just need to tap into some of those sources again. I'll start doing that this weekend...calling area churches and businesses, calling family members of cancer survivors.

My real concern is whether or not I can stay on top of this and keep the energy high. This role is a balance between providing information and being enthusiastic. I can do this. I can DO this. I can TOTALLY DO THIS! I just need to stay focused. And pray.

God, bless this event. Everything from the kick-off tomorrow night, through every meeting and every phone call, all the way until we've turned in every donation and taken down every tent and honored and celebrated every survivor we've known. With You, we can do anything. With Your blessing, we will continue to fight this fight and honoring You in our efforts. In Your most precious Name. Amen.

I had a sleep study done in December. It was decided that I have sleep apnea. I would venture to say that most people do to some point. At any rate, yesterday I was set up with my very own CPAP machine and comfort gel mask. It's not difficult to work and it's not nearly as uncomfortable as I thought it would be. I don't know that I slept any better last night. But we'll see how things go over time.

I'm not ready to give up this blog yet. I enjoy it. But I started a new one nonetheless. I want to get back to writing. So, my new blog is just Exercises in Writing.

I Googled 'exercises in writing' and found a few dozen exercises that I can start with. Some of them give the first line and ask the writer to write for 20 minutes, kind of a stream of consciousness exercise. Some of them suggest that the writer take a published writing and convert it to a different genre. So, some will be quick and probably not as well written; others will take awhile, but will hopefully be better.

At any rate, I'm looking forward to the challenge. I find typing therapeutic. And I find writing therapeutic. I like making up characters the most, but I'll work on other aspects of my writing as well. Check it out every once in awhile.

HISTORY
Do They Know It's Christmas?" is a song written by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure in 1984 to raise money for relief of the 1983–1985 famine in Ethiopia. The original version was produced by Midge Ure and released by Band Aid on 29 November 1984.

In October 1984, a BBC report by Michael Buerk was aired in the UK, which highlighted the famine that had hit the people of Ethiopia. Irish singer Bob Geldof saw the report and wanted to raise money. He called Midge Ure from Ultravox and together they quickly co-wrote the song, "Do They Know It's Christmas?".

Geldof kept a November appointment with BBC Radio 1 DJ Richard Skinner to appear on his show, but instead of discussing his new album (the original reason for his booking), he used his airtime to publicise the idea for the charity single, so by the time the musicians were recruited there was intense media interest in the subject. Geldof put together a group called Band Aid, consisting of leading British and Irish musicians who were among the most popular of the era. On 25 November 1984, the song was recorded at Sarm West Studios in Notting Hill, London, and was released four days later.

The 1984 original became the biggest selling single in UK Singles Chart history, selling a million copies in the first week alone. It stayed at Number 1 for five weeks, becoming Christmas number one, and sold more than 3.5 million copies domestically. It remained the highest selling single in UK chart history until 1997, when Elton John's "Candle in the Wind 1997" was released in tribute to the late Diana, Princess of Wales, which sold almost 5 million copies in Britain.

Following the release of "Do They Know It's Christmas?" in December 1984 and record sales in aid of famine relief, Geldof then set his sights on staging a huge concert, 1985's Live Aid, to raise further funds.

Clement Clarke Moore (1779 - 1863) wrote the poem Twas the night before Christmas also called “A Visit from St. Nicholas" in 1822. It is now the tradition in many American families to read the poem every Christmas Eve. The poem 'Twas the night before Christmas' has redefined our image of Christmas and Santa Claus. Prior to the creation of the story of 'Twas the night before Christmas' St. Nicholas, the patron saint of children, had never been associated with a sleigh or reindeers!

Clement Moore, the author of the poem Twas the night before Christmas, was a reticent man and it is believed that a family friend, Miss H. Butler, sent a copy of the poem to the New York Sentinel who published the poem. The condition of publication was that the author of Twas the night before Christmas was to remain anonymous.

Nast’s Santa appeared as a kindly figure representing Christmas, the holiday celebrating the birth of Christ. Christmas trees have been sold commercially in the United States since about 1850.

Christmas Tradition: Mistletoe

Mistletoe was used by Druid priests 200 years before the birth of Christ in their winter celebrations. They revered the plant since it had no roots yet remained green during the cold months of winter.

The ancient Celtics believed mistletoe to have magical healing powers and used it as an antidote for poison, infertility, and to ward off evil spirits. The plant was also seen as a symbol of peace, and it is said that among Romans, enemies who met under mistletoe would lay down their weapons and embrace.

Scandinavians associated the plant with Frigga, their goddess of love, and it may be from this that we derive the custom of kissing under the mistletoe. Those who kissed under the mistletoe had the promise of happiness and good luck to the following year.

According to ancient Christmas custom, a man and a woman who meet under a hanging of mistletoe were obliged to kiss. The custom may be of Scandinavian origin. It was described in 1820 by American author Washington Irving in his "The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon":

Black Friday

I usually write something with humor on Friday's. But today, I decided to go with something a little more obvious.

Today is Black Friday. I am not a fan. Not sure where that name comes from...unless it's an indicator of the first day that the retail industry gets out of the red and into the black for the first time during the calendar year.

It slays me the way people get out in the middle of the night to shop. And worse, how they compete and fight with each other over the best deals. I saw online this morning that someone was killed at a Wal-Mart. No idea if it's due to Black Friday shopping, but I assumed so. How sad, to die Christmas shopping!

I can only imagine that the employees (the stockers, the greeters, the cashiers) aren't big fans of Black Friday. But the management brings it on themselves. They raise all kinds of hype and then hope for huge sales. To them, the fact that people get hurt, get ugly, and even die is simply an unfortunate side effect. It's all pretty crazy to me. I choose not to shop on this day.

Instead, I slept in and had a late breakfast at the Corner Cafe. I enjoyed a plate of biscuits and gravy...which is SO not good for my diet. But I enjoyed it nonetheless. I used the time to plan my day and journal. I decided that I had lots to do today and plenty of time and energy to do it. Thank You, Lord!

Lord, bless all those crazy shoppers and keep them safe and sane. And especially bless all those people who chose not to feed into the frenzy of Black Friday. But even more, Lord, bless all those in the world who would love to get a gift for someone they love, but they simply do not have the financial resources to do so. Keep them warm and fed, safe and sound during this holiday season and throughout the year. Amen.

Do you know how many times we're told that in the bible? According to a website I read, it's eight. Eight times. We are told in different instances that we should love our neighbors, whoever they may be, in the same way, to the same magnitude, that we love ourselves.

Well no wonder this world is in the shape that it's in!

Most people treat themselves like crap. People everywhere have no self respect, take little pride in themselves, and at times truly hate who they are to the world. Between stress and depression and trying to be all things to all people, we beat ourselves into the ground...to the detriment of our very character and any relationships we might actually be trying to maintain.

And oftentimes, those same feelings get pushed out to the ones we love, to our friends and co-workers, to the strangers in our paths. We are perpetuating our feelings of inadequacy and self-loathing onto those around us.

So we really are loving our neighbors as ourselves. We simply don't love ourselves.

Okay, I know I should be speaking for myself instead of all people. And I think this post describes to a T exactly how I've felt this week. But I see it all around me too.

Maybe the message needs to be, "Love yourself."

Some days, it just doesn't seem worth it to get out of bed.

And I'm not just saying that because I thoroughly enjoy a good night's sleep.

And I actually went to work for three hours and got paid pretty well to be there. So, I guess one could say that it was well worth it. But I digress.

I woke up at 4am to a text message from someone I know well. Fast forward to his last text message just before 8am. Between those two times, our conversation went downhill fast. I went from being frustrated and annoyed just minutes after opening my eyes for the day to broken down, exhausted, and in tears. [sigh]

At the same time, I was in the office. But I felt like I was in an elevator with a few dozen people. Everyone talking at the same time, trying to be heard over the din of every other voice. I can't tell you how many times I wanted to just yell, "SHUT UP!" At on point I left the office area where my cubicle sits, walked a good 50 paces to the bathroom, and could STILL hear two voices from the office area that I left!

I know these people were mostly working. But they were making it difficult for the rest of us to hear ourselves think. I kept turning up my headphones to drown them out...until the volume gave me a headache.

Finally, I decided I'd had my fill. after being at work only three hours, I packed up some things to work on at home... and home is where I went, where I am, where I'm staying.

I'm not going back there until Tuesday.

And I'm not getting into anymore text conversations like the one this morning either.

You are the One I turn to for help in moments of weakness and times of need. I ask you to be with two men very close to my heart (my father and my son) in their illnesses. Psalm 107:20 says that You send out Your Word and heal. So then, please send Your healing Word to Your servants. In the name of Jesus, drive out all infirmity and sickness from their bodies.

Dear Lord, I ask You to turn their weaknesses into strength, their suffering into compassion, their sorrow into joy, and their pain into comfort for others. May Your servants trust in Your goodness and hope in Your faithfulness, even in the middle of this suffering. Let them be filled with patience and joy in Your presence as they wait for Your healing touch.

Please restore Your servants to full health, dear Father. Remove all fear and doubt from their hearts by the power of Your Holy Spirit, and may You, Lord, be glorified through their lives.

PTO

Today I got an email from HR. They want me to project how much PTO (personal time off) I will use in November and December. Things have been pretty (FREAKIN') busy this entire calendar year. And I know that isn't expected to change in the next couple/few months. So, my first thought was, PTO?! Are you kidding me?!

I ran a report of all of my time cards since the beginning of the calendar year. I've taken PTO five times for a total of 47 hours since January 1st. I earn 120 hours a year and I only took 47 of them in the last ten months. And most of those were for medical reasons.

Apparently there were three days in March where I was sick. So, that was 27 hours (because of my 9 hour day). I charged 3.5 hours to PTO for my colonoscopy late in March. I know I had the whole day off, but apparently I had already worked enough hours that I only needed 3.5 hours in order to hit 80 for that pay period. I charged 5 hours to PTO on a Monday in April. My calendar shows 'out tired'. I charged 2.5 hours to PTO in June for Relay for life. And I charged 9 hours to PTO in August...depressed.

I even took a whole day off earlier this month for my dad's surgery. But I'd put in so many hours already, I didn't need to charge any PTO.

So I'm thinking, the chances of me actually taking a whole week off is somewhere between unlikely and 'what the heck are you thinking?'

I projected 40 hours...just in case. Then I checked out my calendar.

I normally work a 9 hour day and get every other Friday off. So I could potentially be off every other Friday for that. Plus, Veterans' Day is a Friday. I'll have Thanksgiving and the Friday after that off. Short weeks throughout November! I love the thought of that!

So, if I take a vacation, it'll be in December. Again, I should have every other Friday off. Christmas is on a Sunday, so it'll be observed on a Monday. I'm thinking about taking off the week between Christmas and New Years. Then I'll be off work from Saturday the 24th until Tuesday the 3rd!
Now, let's see if I can get that approved.

Homemade Vegetable Soup

I decided a few weeks ago that I wanted to start trying out some of the soup recipes on the Weight Watchers site. Since I only cook for one, I figured I could make a soup on Sunday, have it for dinner, and then have lunch already made up for every day of the week.

Well, I finally put my plan into action. This past weekend, I made homemade vegetable soup in my crock pot. I don't know why I made it in the crock pot. But it worked for me. And I didn't actually follow a recipe. I got a good start there, but I added my favorite veggies.

I've never actually made vegetable soup that didn't come out of a can. That sounds pretty ridiculous, doesn't it? But I'm pretty sure it's true. So, I was a little worried that I'd be all excited to try my soup and then I wouldn't like it. But it was wonderful! I already can't wait to make the next one.

23 weeks...

Okay, I don't know how I lost track of the number of weeks. But I started Weight Watchers the first week of May. That was 23 weeks ago.

This week I had a gain. A good one...good, meaning BIG. I knew I hadn't had a good couple of weeks. I've been eating worse and working out less.

When I first started WW, I was doing really well eating right and counting my points, writing down everything I ate. After a couple of months, I started slacking at that. But since I increased my workouts (specifically, I started running), I was still doing pretty well at least maintaining my weight loss.

But I need to do them both...consistently...and together. If I want to see results, I need to do better. And I want to see results. So, here I go, being better.

Just to keep it real, I'm only 13% of the way to my goal. Yeah, a gain from two weeks ago. But I'm working on it. Seriously! We'll see how things look next week.

I realize that the Book of Sirach isn't included in most Protestant bibles. But the Catholic Church long ago included several books of the Apocrypha (Tobit, Judith, 1 Maccabees, 2 Maccabees, Wisdom [of Solomon], Sirach, and Baruch, known as the Septuagint, as well as parts of existing books -- including Psalm 151, parts of the Book of Esther, Daniel:13 [Susanna], and Daniel:14 [Bel and the Dragon]), as part of the Catholic Canon. It wasn't until 1500 years later that the Protestant Churches reverted to the Jewish Canon as the basis for their bible.

At any rate, this weekend's first reading is from the Book of Sirach. I believe it's an appropriate message on this day, the 10th anniversary of 9/11.

I have never been so in love.

15 weeks...

...and I had another gain. And this is the first time that it surprised me. I really didn't expect it, so I'm bummed. I gained 1.4 lbs this week and am back to only 12% of the way to my goal.

On a more positive note, I finally set up my Wii Fit and worked out for an hour last night. Worked different muscles than I'm used to and am totally feeling it today. I'm not giving up. I have another 88% to go!

Matthew 16:13-20

Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi and
he asked his disciples, "Who do people say that the Son of Man is?"

They replied, "Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah,
still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets."

He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?"

Simon Peter said in reply,
"You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."

Jesus said to him in reply,
"Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah.
For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father.
And so I say to you, you are Peter,
and upon this rock I will build my church,
and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.
I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven.
Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven;
and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."

Then he strictly ordered his disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ.

...and exactly 14% of the way to my goal. I lost 1.6 pounds today. Slowly but surely!

Matthew 15:21-28

At that time, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon.
And behold, a Canaanite woman of that district came and called out,
"Have pity on me, Lord, Son of David!
My daughter is tormented by a demon."
But Jesus did not say a word in answer to her.
Jesus' disciples came and asked him,
"Send her away, for she keeps calling out after us."
He said in reply,
"I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel."
But the woman came and did Jesus homage, saying, "Lord, help me."
He said in reply,
"It is not right to take the food of the children
and throw it to the dogs."
She said, "Please, Lord, for even the dogs eat the scraps
that fall from the table of their masters."
Then Jesus said to her in reply,
"O woman, great is your faith!
Let it be done for you as you wish."
And the woman's daughter was healed from that hour.

Matthew 14:22-33

After he had fed the people, Jesus made the disciples get into a boat
and precede him to the other side,
while he dismissed the crowds.
After doing so, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray.
When it was evening he was there alone.
Meanwhile the boat, already a few miles offshore,
was being tossed about by the waves, for the wind was against it.
During the fourth watch of the night,
he came toward them walking on the sea.
When the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified.

“It is a ghost,” they said, and they cried out in fear.

At once Jesus spoke to them, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.”
Peter said to him in reply,
“Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.”
He said, “Come.”

Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus.
But when he saw how strong the wind was he became frightened;
and, beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!”
Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught Peter,
and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”

After they got into the boat, the wind died down.
Those who were in the boat did him homage, saying,
“Truly, you are the Son of God.”

Life Explained

On the first day, God created the dog and said, "Sit all day by the door of your house and bark at anyone who comes in or walks past. For this, I will give you a life span of twenty years."
The dog said, "That's a long time to be barking. How about only ten years and I'll give you back the other ten?"

So God saw it was good.

On the second day, God created the monkey and said, "Entertain people, do tricks, and make them laugh. For this, I'll give you a twenty-year life span."

The monkey said, "Monkey tricks for twenty years? That's a pretty long time to perform. How about I give you back ten like the dog did?"

And God again saw it was good.

On the third day, God created the cow and said, "You must go into the field with the farmer all day long and suffer under the sun, have calves and give milk to support the farmer's family. For this, I will give you a life span of sixty years."

The cow said, "That's kind of a tough life you want me to live for sixty years. How about twenty and I'll give back the other forty?"

And God agreed it was good.

On the fourth day, God created humans and said, "Eat, sleep, play, marry and enjoy your life. For this, I'll give you twenty years."

But the human said, "Only twenty years? Could you possibly give me my twenty, the forty the cow gave back, the ten the monkey gave back, and the ten the dog gave back; that makes eighty, okay?"

"Okay," said God, "You asked for it."

So that is why for our first twenty years, we eat, sleep, play and enjoy ourselves. For the next forty years, we slave in the sun to support our family. For the next ten years, we do monkey tricks to entertain the grandchildren. And for the last ten years, we sit on the front porch and bark at everyone.

Life has now been explained to you.

Twelve weeks...

...and 11.2 pounds lost. Unfortunately, I gained 2.2 lbs this week. I'm hoping it's just this particular week. We'll see how next week goes.

How's Work Going?

When you have an 'I Hate My Job day', try this out:

Stop at your pharmacy and go to the thermometer section and purchase a rectal thermometer made by Johnson & Johnson. Be very sure you get this brand. When you get home, lock your doors, draw the curtains and disconnect the phone so you will not be disturbed. Change into very comfortable clothing and sit in your favorite chair. Open the package and remove the thermometer. Now, carefully place it on a table or a surface so that it will not become chipped or broken.

Now the fun part begins.
Take out the literature from the box and read it carefully. You will notice that in small print there is this statement: "Every Rectal Thermometer made by Johnson & Johnson is ****personally tested **** and then sanitized."

Now, close your eyes and repeat out loud five times, 'I am so glad I do not work in the thermometer quality control department at Johnson & Johnson.'

HAVE A NICE DAY; AND REMEMBER, THERE IS ALWAYS SOMEONE ELSE WITH A JOB THAT IS MORE OF A PAIN IN THE BUTT THAN YOURS!

I lost 4.4 pounds this week! Wow! Yea, me!

It's got to be the walking/running that I'm doing. Hydrating for the next walk/run right now!

1 Kings 3:5, 7-12

The LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream at night.
God said, “Ask something of me and I will give it to you.”
Solomon answered:
“O LORD, my God, you have made me, your servant, king
to succeed my father David;
but I am a mere youth, not knowing at all how to act.
I serve you in the midst of the people whom you have chosen,
a people so vast that it cannot be numbered or counted.
Give your servant, therefore, an understanding heart
to judge your people and to distinguish right from wrong. For who is able to govern this vast people of yours?”

The LORD was pleased that Solomon made this request.
So God said to him:
“Because you have asked for this—
not for a long life for yourself,
nor for riches,
nor for the life of your enemies,
but for understanding so that you may know what is right—
I do as you requested.
I give you a heart so wise and understanding
that there has never been anyone like you up to now,
and after you there will come no one to equal you.”
