Only This I Want

Only this I want: but to know the Lord,
And to bear His cross, so to wear the crown He wore.

All but this is loss, worthless refuse to me,
For to gain the Lord, is to gain all I need.

I will run the race; I will fight the good fight,
So to win the prize of the kingdom of my Lord.

Let your heart be glad, always glad in the Lord,
So to shine like stars in the darkness of the night.

If you want to hear the melody, come join me in the choir loft at St John's on Saturday at 5pm.  It's a beautiful hymn.

It Is Well

I love this song.  I need to figure out how to put a shortcut on my phone that I can touch one time and bring up this song any time I need it.  Thank you, Kristene DiMarco and Bethel Music for sharing your gifts.

It Is Well

Kristene DiMarco and Bethel Music

Grander earth has quaked before
Moved by the sound of His voice.
Seas that are shaken and stirred
Can be calmed and broken for my regard.

Through it all, through it all, my eyes are on You.
And through it all, through it all, it is well.
And through it all, through it all, my eyes are on You.
And it is well with me.

Far be it from me to not believe
Even when my eyes can't see.
And this mountain that's in front of me
Will be thrown into the midst of the sea.

And through it all, through it all, my eyes are on You.
And through it all, through it all, it is well.
And through it all, through it all, my eyes are on You.
And it is well, it is well.

So let go, my soul, and trust in Him.
The waves and wind still know His Name.
So let go, my soul, and trust in Him.
The waves and wind still know His Name.
So let go, my soul, and trust in Him.
The waves and wind still know His Name.
The waves and wind still know His Name.

It is well with my soul.
It is well with my soul.
It is well with my soul.
It is well, it is well with my soul.

It is well with my soul.

It is well with my soul.
It is well with my soul.
It is well, it is well with my soul.

It is well, it is well with my soul.

It is well, it is well with my soul.

And through it all, through it all, my eyes are on You.
And through it all, through it all, it is well.
And through it all, through it all, my eyes are on you.
And it is well with me.

Fight Song

I love this song.  And even though it doesn't speak to me all that much when I'm depressed, I try to listen to it first thing every morning.

"Fight Song" by Rachel Platten

Like a small boat
On the ocean
Sending big waves
Into motion
Like how a single word
Can make a heart open
I might only have one match
but I can make an explosion

And all those things I didn't say
Wrecking balls inside my brain
I will scream them loud tonight
Can you hear my voice this time

This is my fight song
Take back my life song
Prove I'm alright song
My power's turned on
Starting right now I'll be strong
I'll play my fight song
And I don't really care if nobody else believes
Cause I've still got a lot of fight left in me

Losing friends and I'm chasing sleep
Everybody's worried about me
In too deep
Say I'm in too deep
And it's been two years
I miss my home
But there's a fire burning in my bones
And I still believe
Yeah I still believe

And all those things I didn't say
Wrecking balls inside my brain
I will scream them loud tonight
Can you hear my voice this time

This is my fight song
Take back my life song
Prove I'm alright song
My power's turned on
Starting right now I'll be strong
I'll play my fight song
And I don't really care if nobody else believes
Cause I've still got a lot of fight left in me

A lot of fight left in me

Like a small boat
On the ocean
Sending big waves
Into motion
Like how a single word
Can make a heart open
I might only have one match
but I can make an explosion

This is my fight song
Take back my life song
Prove I'm alright song
My power's turned on
Starting right now I'll be strong
I'll play my fight song
And I don't really care if nobody else believes
Cause I've still got a lot of fight left in me

Now I've still got a lot of fight left in me

Holy Week

We sang this song at mass tonight.  So peaceful and centering.  The words... amazing!  The melody is almost a chant and is somewhat eerie.  But I really like it.  And the words, again... truly amazing.

"There Will Be a Day" - Jeremy Camp

I have to admit, I'm really getting swept up in all the stress and uncertainty concerning all-things-government.  I work for a Defense contractor.  It took us six months to get our contract signed during the sequestration and government furloughs.  Then less than a month later, there's a partial government shutdown.  Luckily I've been able to work throughout this ordeal.  But it's been a constant stressor as to how long that will last.  Now with conversations concerning the debt ceiling on the horizon, I just don't know how to handle it all.

I needed a reminder from a couple of my friends that I can't fix it all.  I don't even have to understand it all.  I need to keep in mind that God has my back.  He's in control.  Even if we screw things up over and over again down here... which we seem to be mastering lately... He still has us in the palm of His hand.  And one day, we'll be right there with Him.

Lord, please keep my head on straight.  Don't let me get all wrapped up in things I cannot control.  Remind me daily, hourly, in every minute, that I have YOU looking after me and mine.  Keep me positive and focused on the things I can control.  I know that through You, I can do anything.  In Your Holy Name, amen.

I try to hold on to this world with everything I have
But I feel the weight of what it brings, and the hurt that tries to grab
The many trials that seem to never end, His word declares this truth,
that we will enter in this rest with wonders anew

But I hold on to this hope and the promise that He brings
That there will be a place with no more suffering

There will be a day with no more tears, no more pain, and no more fears
There will be a day when the burdens of this place, will be no more, we'll see Jesus face to face
But until that day, we'll hold on to You always

I know the journey seems so long
You feel you're walking on your own
But there has never been a step
Where you've walked out all alone

Troubled soul don't lose your heart
Cause joy and peace he brings
And the beauty that's in store
Outweighs the hurt of life's sting

But I hold on to this hope and the promise that He brings
That there will be a place with no more suffering

There will be a day with no more tears, no more pain, and no more fears
There will be a day when the burdens of this place, will be no more, we'll see Jesus face to face
But until that day, we'll hold on to You always

I can't wait until that day
where the very one I've lived for always
will wipe away the sorrow that I've faced
To touch the scars that rescued me
from a life of shame and misery
oh, this is why, this is why I sing

There will be a day with no more tears, no more pain, and no more fears
There will be a day when the burdens of this place, will be no more, we'll see Jesus face to face

Seek Ye First

I know I say this regularly, but this is one of my favorite hymns.  When we sing this at mass, we sing six different verses.  This one only has three.  The melody and the words are wonderful... especially since the words are scripture.  But the pictures are perfect.  I love this rendition.  Enjoy!

God of this City - Chris Tomlin

You're the God of this city.  You're the King of these people.
You're the Lord of this nation.  You are.

You're the Light in this darkness. You're the Hope to the hopeless.
You're the Peace to the restless.  You are.

[Chorus]
For greater things have yet to come
And greater things are still to be done in this city.
Greater thing have yet to come
And greater things are still to be done in this city.

The Elements

"The Elements" was written by Tom Lehrer in 1959 and only includes the elements that had been discovered up to that point. [I've included the more recent elements in green below.]  The song is sung to the tune of "Major-General's Song" by Gilbert and Sullivan.

The order of the elements in this song is for entertainment value only.  Not by number, not by discovery date, not in alphabetical order...but to keep the song moving and rhyming and entertaining you and me.

There's antimony, arsenic, aluminum, selenium,
And hydrogen and oxygen and nitrogen and rhenium,
And nickel, neodymium, neptunium, germanium,
And iron, americium, ruthenium, uranium,

Europium, zirconium, lutetium, vanadium,
And lanthanum and osmium and astatine and radium,
And gold and protactinium and indium and gallium,
< gasp >
And iodine and thorium and thulium and thallium.

There's yttrium, ytterbium, actinium, rubidium,
And boron, gadolinium, niobium, iridium,
And strontium and silicon and silver and samarium,
And bismuth, bromine, lithium, beryllium, and barium.

There's holmium and helium and hafnium and erbium,
And phosphorus and francium and fluorine and terbium,
And manganese and mercury, molybdenum, magnesium,
Dysprosium and scandium and cerium and cesium.

And lead, praseodymium, and platinum, plutonium,
Palladium, promethium, potassium, polonium,
And tantalum, technetium, titanium, tellurium,
< gasp >
And cadmium and calcium and chromium and curium.

There's sulfur, californium, and fermium, berkelium,
And also mendelevium, einsteinium, nobelium,
And argon, krypton, neon, radon, xenon, zinc, and rhodium,
And chlorine, carbon, cobalt, copper, tungsten, tin, and sodium.

[There's borium, lawrencium, livermorium, rutherfordium
And darmstadtium, flerovium, seaborgium, meitnerium,
And capernicium, roentgenium, ubniu, finally hassium]

These are the only ones of which the news has come to Harvard,
And there may be many others, but they haven't been discarvard
(discovered).

Part the Waters

When I think I'm going under, part the waters, Lord.
When I feel the waves around me, calm the sea.
When I cry for help, oh, hear me, Lord, and hold out Your hand.
Touch my life.
Still the raging storm in me.

Only Hope - Switchfoot

I need to stop relying on other things to make me feel worthy, relevant, necessary, and loved.
He IS my only hope.

"Worn" by Tenth Avenue North

This song has been running through my head pretty consistently for the last five days.

Let me see redemption win.
Let me know the struggle ends,
That You can mend a heart
That’s frail and torn.
I wanna know a song can rise
From the ashes of a broken life
And all that’s dead inside can be reborn.
Cause I’m worn.

Blessings - Laura Story

[this song speaks to me EVERY TIME I hear it]

"Blessings"
We pray for blessings, we pray for peace.
Comfort for family, protection while we sleep.
We pray for healing, for prosperity.
We pray for Your mighty hand to ease our suffering.
And all the while, You hear each spoken need,
Yet love us way too much to give us lesser things.
'Cause what if your blessings come through rain drops.
What if Your healing comes through tears.
What if a thousand sleepless nights are what it takes to know You're near.
What if trials of this life are Your mercies in disguise.
We pray for wisdom, Your voice to hear.
We cry in anger when we cannot feel You near.
We doubt Your goodness; we doubt Your love...
As if every promise from Your Word is not enough.
And all the while, You hear each desperate plea
And long that we'd have faith to believe.
'Cause what if your blessings come through rain drops.
What if Your healing comes through tears.
What if a thousand sleepless nights are what it takes to know You're near.
What if trials of this life are Your mercies in disguise.
When friends betray us...
When darkness seems to win,
We know that pain reminds this heart
That this is not,
This is not our home!
It's not our home.
'Cause what if your blessings come through rain drops.
What if Your healing comes through tears.
What if a thousand sleepless nights are what it takes to know You're near.
What if my greatest disappointments or the aching of this life
Is the revealing of a greater thirst this world can't satisfy.
What if trials of this life...
The rain, the storms, the hardest nights...
Are your mercies in disguise.

Someone Worth Dying For - Mike's Chair

"Someone Worth Dying For"
Mike's Chair

You might be the wife waiting up at night
You might be the man struggling to provide
Feeling like it's hopeless

Maybe you're the son who chose a broken road
Maybe you're the girl thinking you'll end up alone
Praying God, can You hear me?
Oh, God, are You listening?

Am I more than flesh and bone?
Am I really something beautiful?
Yeah, I wanna believe
I wanna believe that

I'm not just some wandering soul
That You don't see and You don't know
Yeah, I wanna believe, Jesus, help me believe
That I am someone worth dying for

I know you've heard the truth that God has set you free
But you think you're the one that grace could never reach
So you just keep asking
Oh, what everybody's asking

Am I more than flesh and bone?
Am I really something beautiful?
Yeah I wanna believe
I wanna believe that

I'm not just some wandering soul
That You don't see and You don't know
Yeah, I wanna believe, Jesus, help me believe
That I am someone worth dying for

You're worth it, you can't earn it
Yeah, the cross has proven
That You're sacred and blameless
Your life has purpose

You are more than flesh and bone
Can't you see, you're something beautiful?
Yes, you gotta believe, you gotta believe
He wants you to see, He wants you to see

That you're not just some wandering soul
That can't be seen and can't be known
Yeah, you gotta believe, you gotta believe that you are
Someone worth dying for, oh

You're someone worth dying for, oh
You're someone worth dying for

Take Our Bread (hymn)

Take our bread, we ask You.
Take our hearts, we love You.
Take our lives, oh Father, we are Yours.

We are Yours.

Yours as we stand at the table You set.
Yours as we eat the bread our hearts can't forget.
We are the signs of Your life with us yet.
We are Yours.  We are Yours.

Refrain

Your holy people stand washed in Your blood.
Spirit filled, yet hungry, we await Your food.
Poor though we are, we have brought ourselves to you...
We are Yours.  We are Yours.

Refrain

We sang this at mass this morning.  My favorite line is, "we are Yours."  Lucky me, we got to sing that line several times.  I've included a YouTube video of the hymn.  Enjoy!

Repost: Christmas Epiphany

I want all of my blog posts this month to be about Christmas.  And because I love the message of this one so much, I'm recycling it.  I originally wrote it in November of 2007.  Hope you don't mind the repeat.

The Summons

I got to sing this song at mass this morning. I love the words and the melody. Thought I'd share it with you.

If you'd like to hear it, click http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P8lOfMjtxdE.

Will you come and follow Me if I but call your name?
Will you go where you don't know and never be the same?
Will you let My love be shown, will you let My name be known?
Will you let My life be grown in you and you in Me?

Will you leave yourself behind if I but call your name?
Will you care for cruel and kind and never be the same?
Will you risk the hostile stare should your life attract or scare?
Will you let Me answer prayer in you and you in Me?

Will you let the blinded see if I but call your name?
Will you set the prisoners free and never be the same?
Will you kiss the leper clean and do such as this unseen,
and admit to what I mean in you and you in Me?

Will you love the 'you' you hide if I but call your name?
Will you quell the fear inside and never be the same?
Will you use the faith you've found to reshape the world around,
through My sight and touch and sound in you and you in Me?

Lord, Your summons echoes true when You but call my name.
Let me turn and follow You and never be the same.
In your company I'll go where Your love and footsteps show.
Thus I'll move and live and grow in You and You in me.

I'll Stay by Cadia

I've said it before; I'm sure I'll say it again...

Music is vital to me.

I can define certain times in my life by songs that were important to me at the time. I use music to help me define the characters that I write about. And I have songs that I associate to the people who are close to me, usually because the words are very poignant.

A while ago, I blogged about music that defined how I felt about Jeff at different times in my life. Well, I have a new one. Between yesterday's blog and today's song, I'm sure you'll understand that Jeff continues to be a bit of a challenge for me.

Introducing "I'll Stay" by Cadia. Enjoy!
